“The Role of Effective Implementation of Policies, Legislation and Programmes to Promote Healthy Ageing’’_IFIM Law School

Bengaluru, 5th May, 2019 Healthy ageing to find solutions under policies, legislation and programmes
Bengaluru, May 2nd, 2019: Bengaluru’s premier Law School, IFIM Law School, hosted a Sensitization Programme on “The Role of Effective Implementation of Policies, Legislation and Programmes to Promote Healthy Ageing” at the campus today. The event was organised in association with Karnataka State Legal Services Authority (KSLSA) and NIMHANS.
The chief guest for the event was Hon’ble Justice Shri. Ashok B Hinchigeri, Chairman, Advisory Board, ‘Age-Friendly Karnataka’ and Retd. Judge, High Court of Karnataka. Shri. P Krishna Bhat, Hon’ble Principal District and Sessions Judge, Bengaluru, Rural District and Chairman – District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and Ms. Rama N S, Chief Executive Officer, Electronics City Industries Association(ELCIA), Bengaluru were the guests of honor for the event.
The event was organised as a part of IFIM Law College’s Legal Aid Clinic, a student driven initiative, which aims to provide free legal services to the needy people, in and around Bangalore. The elderly of the country, are provided with several legal benefits, most of which do not reach them. This event focuses on the policies, legislation and the role of society in facilitating healthy ageing in the society.
In line with the event’s agenda, Dr Avinash Dadhich, Principal and Associate Dean at IFIM Law School highlighted the need for the discussion amongst the student fraternity. “In this fast growing world, healthy ageing is something which has barely been spoken about, and the policies related to it, lesser known. Our role as learning professionals in this field is to understand the issues that are prevalent, and, effectively contribute towards implementation of related policies in order to sustain a long and healthy life.
Dr P T Sivakumar, Professor, Department of Psychiatry Geriatric Clinic and Services; conveners and Nodal Officer ‘Age Friendly Karnataka’ stated ‘’With the commercialisation of the healthcare sector, people have more preference over remedial measures than preventive ones. Similar to the context of the event, people who are ageing get more engrossed in the acts of getting away with it and not celebrating their success of long lives. Healthy ageing demands immense self-confidence and the enthusiasm to keep oneself fit and healthy enough to sustain wellness of a strong mental and physical abilities.”
In addition to free legal advice, the legal-aid clinic, further pledges to safeguard children and women from numerous forms of abuses and other assaults. This has led to the launch of SAFE HELPLINE through which a victim can directly contact the clinic and get assistance, in case of emergency. For any legal assistance, the clinic also an association with District Legal Services Authority, Bangalore for effective solution.
