One Day Workshop on Career in Law

IFIM Law School conducted a One Day Workshop on Career in Law on 23rd February 2019 at IFIM Law School, Electronic City, Bengaluru. The resource persons for the Workshop were Ms Ojasvita Srivastava, Mr Subramaniam Ramaswamy and Wg Cdr. S.K. Prakash (Retd)
Ms Ojasvita Srivastava is presently working in the position of Legal Counsel, Guam and Papua New Guinea at G4S and founded Project Abhimanyu in July 2015.
She completed her LLB (Honours) course from V. M. Salgaocar College of Law, Goa in 2010 with full scholarship throughout the course and acquired an LLM in Commercial and Corporate Law from Queen Mary, University of London in 2014. In the intermittent period between her LLB and LLM, she worked at a multinational French Pharma company in Mumbai and later practised at the Supreme Court, Delhi High Court and three District courts at Delhi.
Mr. Subramaniam Ramaswamy is the Founder of Medha Advisors, a Business Consultancy and Advisory firm and serves as the Chairman of the General Counsel Section of Indian National Bar Association (INBA). He is a member of Institute of Directors (IOD), Past President Indian Corporate Counsel Association, a professional organization for In-House Counsel, Co Chairman of Law & Justice Committee of PHDCCI, Member of Institute of Internal Auditors, Florida, USA/India, Vice President – North of India International ADR Association.
He had been associated with ASSOCHAM Expert Committee on Company Affairs (2005-06&2006-07), Member of ASSOCHAM, National Council of Legal Affairs 2014, Legal Affairs & IPR Council – Nomination on Expert Council (2011), Honorary Member of Society of Indian Law Firms (2005-06), ASSOCHAM Expert Committee on IPR-2011).
He is a former General Counsel & Company Secretary and a Certified Corporate Director and has served in various capacities as Director, Group General Counsel, Head Of Legal, Intellectual Property Advisor, Company Secretary & Head Internal Audit/ Corporate Affairs during my overall Professional career. He has a wide experience of dealing with global and multi-jurisdictional Legal, Anti Bribery, Corporate Governance& Compliance matters including good networking with Global Legal Professionals, Institutions & Law Firms.
He recently visited the UK parliament with a delegation for “Make in India” on June 13th, 2016 on being invited by a British Parliamentarian where he presented a Report to the Ministry of Law on Opening up of Foreign Legal Services.
Wg Cdr. S.K. Prakash (Retd)
Wing Commander Sivarama Krishna Prakash commenced his career with a short stint in Central Bank of India and then moved in to the Indian Air Force, where he spent the first
seven years in the Administrative Branch as an Air Traffic and Radar Controller and then moved in to the Judge Advocate Department, where he worked for another 16 years before taking premature retirement from
the IAF in 2009 to join the corporate world. His stint in the corporate world has been with the legal department of two companies, i.e., IBS Software Services Pvt. Ltd. from 2009 to 2011 and with Cisco since
2011.
Wg Cdr Prakash is a multifaceted 360-degree lawyer with experience in various legal facets like Arbitration, Banking, Commercial and Engineering Contracts, Cyber Law, eDiscovery, Escrow, IP, Litigation,
Labour Laws, Procurement, Privacy, Telecom Laws, Compliance, and Software Licensing. He is also in the panel of ICADR as Arbitrator. Wg Cdr Prakash has been the first IAF Officer to undergo the prestigious Judge
Advocate Staff Course with the US Air Force at their JAG School in Montgomery, Alabama.
Agenda
The training team prepared the Session Plan, with an objective of bringing a holistic understanding of Project Abhimanyu and how the law students can approach them in case of assistance required with available
career options and job opportunities. The Session Plan was as follows: -
- Session 1- Introduction to Project Abhimanyu
- Session 2 -Career Option available to a Law Graduate
- Session 3 – Soft Skills required for a Lawyer
- Session 4- Introduction to IPR and career option available to a IPR lawyer
The Workshop Session:
The Workshop opened with a welcome address by Prof. (Dr) Avinash Dadhich, Principal, IFIM Law School. In his address to the students, Dr Avinash Dadhich spoke about the importance
of conducting the workshop on career in law, to bring to the attention of the student’s the gigantic options available to a law student. He also appreciated the noble idea of Project Abhimanyu, who guide students
about the available career options and job opportunities as well as help them edit their resumes and cover letters while applying for internships and jobs. The session began by an introduction about Project
Abhimanyu, its Vision, Mission, Strategies and the team of Project Abhimanyu by Ms Ojasvita Srivastava.
In the second session Ms Ojasvita highlighted the different avenues open for a law graduate in litigation, law firm, corporate, academics. She also explained about the diverse mindset and skill
required apiece the branch chosen by one.
The third session was taken over by Mr. Subramaniam Ramaswamy who addressed our students about the soft skills which needs to be inculcated in a budding lawyer. Sir motivated the students to
imbibe the habit of reading which is pertinent for a law student to reach the zenith of success.
The concluding session was conducted by Wg Cdr. S.K. Prakash (Retd) who discussed about the foundation of Intellectual Property Right and the different kinds of intellectual property such as
trade mark, patent, copyright, geographical indication. Sir, thereafter proceeded with the divergent options available for an IPR Lawyer. The session concluded on a positive note. Ms. Shivani Dutta, Assistant
Professor, IFIM Law School proposed the vote of thanks and expressed her sincere gratitude to all the speakers for sharing the righteous object of Project Abhimanyu with the students of IFIM Law School.
